UNC Tar Heels Claim NCAA Title with 12-8 Victory Over Northwestern!

FOXBOROUGH, MASS.— In a thrilling showdown, redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey scored four goals and added an assist, leading North Carolina to a 12-8 victory over Northwestern in the 2025 NCAA women’s lacrosse championship. This win marks UNC’s fourth national title, adding to their previous victories in 2013, 2016, and 2022.

The Tar Heel defense was particularly impressive, restricting the Wildcats to just eight goals. Notably, Madison Taylor, the leading scorer in the nation, was held scoreless for the first time in 45 games, thanks to standout defense from Sam Forrest and the rest of the UNC team. While Taylor assisted on four plays, her goal-scoring streak came to an unexpected halt.

Eliza Osburn made a significant impact by scoring two goals in just nine seconds during a critical part of the fourth quarter. Olivia Vergano also contributed with two goals and an assist.

UNC finished the season undefeated at 22-0, matching the school record for wins set by the 2022 squad. This triumph ended Northwestern’s impressive 11-game winning streak.

Head coach Jenny Levy has solidified her place in NCAA history, now with four championships to her name—making her fourth all-time among NCAA coaches. The Tar Heels have been dominant, with a record of 97-12 in their last 109 games, showcasing consistent offensive power.

In the early game, Northwestern took the lead but UNC quickly rallied, scoring five straight goals. They also displayed excellent defensive skills, limiting Northwestern to just two goals by halftime. The game was marked by a long scoreless period for Northwestern, who struggled to recover.

Overall, it was a historic day, with a record crowd of 14,423 in attendance at Gillette Stadium. This victory adds to UNC’s remarkable history of success, which includes having multiple NCAA championships in the same academic year—this being the 13th time the university has achieved such a feat.
