Food access and eating habits vary greatly across different regions of the U.S. In the South and Midwest, where obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are more common, people often eat fewer fruits and vegetables. Instead, they tend to consume more sugary drinks and processed foods. This pattern is heavily influenced by socioeconomic factors, especially food insecurity, which is more prevalent in these areas.

Food insecurity means not having regular access to enough food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that about 12.2% of households face this issue. However, in states like Arkansas (18.9%), Texas (16.9%), Mississippi (16.2%), and Louisiana (16.2%), the rates are much higher. As a result, families in these regions often rely on less nutritious, cheap foods, leading to unhealthy diets. This cycle of poor nutrition contributes to the growing rates of diet-related diseases in these areas.

On the other hand, states with lower food insecurity tend to have healthier eating habits. For example, in New England states such as Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire, a large percentage of adults eat fruits and vegetables regularly. Over 64% of adults in these states eat fruits daily, while more than 84% consume vegetables every day. Lower food insecurity levels in these areas help ensure better access to affordable, nutritious food, supporting healthier choices.

Addressing the health challenges in the U.S. requires a comprehensive approach. This includes improving access to healthy food, reducing food insecurity, and encouraging better lifestyle choices. As more people recognize the importance of a balanced diet, there is hope that we can reverse some of the negative health trends we’ve seen in recent years.
