Saturday Night Live kicked off the night with a humorous sketch based on Donald Trump’s meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. The sketch showcased Trump and Vice President JD Vance belittling the Ukrainian leader as he tried to explain the complexities of dealing with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
In a surprise twist, Mike Myers made a fun appearance as a chainsaw-wielding Elon Musk. He humorously questioned Trump, saying, “Donald, what are you doing in my office? You know I’m the president now, right?” His back-and-forth was filled with playful banter—“I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Maybe not?”
The scene got interesting with Zelensky sitting across from Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) and Vance (portrayed by Bowen Yang), along with a comically dazed Secretary of State Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernandez).
Trump pushed Zelensky to express more gratitude, jokingly suggesting, “Maybe tell Mr. Putin how much you love him and that you’re sorry you invaded Russia.” But before Zelensky could reply, Vance jumped in, frustrated. “Excuse me. I’m trying to jump in here because that is not how we planned this. What happened to saying thank you? You haven’t thanked us once!”
As the dialogue built up, the sketch became increasingly absurd, mirroring the real-life tension of such meetings. Zelensky attempted to speak, but found himself interrupted, as Trump and Vance scolded him for not being respectful enough. Some of their lines echoed actual statements made by Trump.
“You say you want to end this war, but frankly, you don’t have the cards. I have the cards. I have Skip, Draw Four, Reverse, and even the Get Out of Jail Free card,” Trump claimed, humorously comparing diplomatic negotiations to a game of cards.
In a comedic jab about Zelensky’s attire, Trump criticized him for not dressing formally: “It’s disrespectful. Who shows up at the White House in a T-shirt and jeans like a garbage person?” This was a clever nod to the real-life criticism Zelensky received, especially since Musk had also appeared casually dressed the previous week.
Myers’ Musk character took the stage, clad in similar casual wear, proudly brandishing a chainsaw and reveling in his notorious firings at Twitter. “They’re saying I’m firing people without cause. I do have cause. It’s cause I feel like it,” he quipped.
Myers then introduced his comical sidekick, Big Balls. They announced their outlandish new initiative: the Department of Undoing Child Health Care and Education, cheekily abbreviated to “DOUCHE.”
The sketch captured the blend of humor and satire, poking fun at present-day politics while highlighting the absurdities of high-stakes diplomacy. It was a lighthearted take that resonated with current events and kept the audience engaged throughout.
