Unforgettable Victory: No. 24 Volleyball Stuns No. 6 Southwestern Minnesota State University – UMD Athletics Highlights

Sophomore outside hitter Xada Johnson had a standout performance to help the No. 24 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Volleyball Team beat No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) 3-1. This victory marked UMD’s best start since 2022, now boasting a record of 9-0 and a 2-0 start in the NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference).

Johnson recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs, showcasing her skills on both offense and defense. Junior Madeline Guetzkow shone with a match-high 18 kills, while junior Paige Decker contributed 11 kills and six blocks. Sophomore setter Ava Jones was pivotal, matching her career-high with 52 assists, and junior Madison Reed topped the team with 21 digs.

UMD outperformed SMSU in significant areas: they hit .306 compared to SMSU’s .159 and recorded 66 kills versus 43. They also led in assists (60-39) and digs (72-60). This was UMD’s first win against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 8 St. Cloud State in 2023 and their highest-ranked win since 2019.

After losing the first set, UMD regrouped and jumped ahead in the second set. With key plays from Jones and Guetzkow, they took control and tied the match. UMD’s momentum continued into the third set, where they effectively built a lead, thanks to strong contributions from Johnson and other teammates. The fourth set saw UMD dominate from the start, securing an unassailable lead that ultimately led to their victory.

This match reflects a trend in college volleyball where underdog teams are making impressive strides. According to a recent survey from the NCAA, 60% of college athletic programs reported a significant increase in competition levels over the past few years.
