Unilever Considers Selling Hellmann’s to McCormick: What This Means for Your Favorite Condiment

Unilever is in talks to sell its food division to McCormick & Company, known for its spices. This could be a big move for both companies. Unilever, which owns brands like Hellmann’s mayonnaise and Knorr soup, saw its food division contribute around 25% to its total revenue last year, or about €12.9 billion ($14.91 billion).

If the deal goes through, it would connect Hellmann’s with McCormick’s Cholula hot sauce, expanding product offerings for spice lovers. This aligns with Unilever’s plan to focus more on its beauty and personal care products. CEO Fernando Fernandez is steering the company in this direction, having already spun off its ice cream division last year.

Both Unilever and McCormick have stated that there’s no agreement finalized yet, and the financial details are still unclear. This news follows a report from the Wall Street Journal, which noted that Unilever is looking to separate its food operations. Other products like Colman mustard and Marmite may also be included in the sale.

Interestingly, there were earlier discussions about merging Unilever’s food segment with Kraft Heinz’s condiment brands, but those plans were scrapped. As the food industry evolves, many companies are seeking strategic partnerships and sales to adapt to changing consumer demands.

According to a recent study by the International Food Information Council, nearly 70% of consumers are now more conscious about where their food comes from. This trend could influence how Unilever and McCormick position their brands post-deal. Understanding consumer preferences will be key for whichever company ultimately takes the lead in this new arrangement.
