University’s boys tennis team put on a thrilling show on Monday, bouncing back against Corona del Mar, ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section. After an intense match that stretched over four hours, the teams ended up tied at 9-9 in sets and 78-78 in games. University clinched the win in a super tiebreaker, 4-2.
“This was a classic tennis match,” said University coach John Kessler. “Both teams played at a high level. The energy on the court was electric.”
Earlier this season, on February 26, Corona del Mar (17-1) had defeated University (14-3) 13-5, a loss that fueled University’s resolve. The players were determined to show their strength in this rematch.
When the scores evened out, all players returned to the court for a tiebreaker to seven points. University’s JiHyuk Im and Gavin Yue won their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Arjun Appa with Langston Walter-Wu, and Reid Hashimoto with Tyler Chandler also claimed victories.
“They’ve worked hard to climb back up the rankings,” Kessler said. “I’m really proud of their effort, but we have more to do.”
On the other side, Corona del Mar’s Ivan Pflueger had a standout performance, winning all his singles matches decisively and taking his tiebreaker as well.
The upcoming match against Northwood is crucial for University. A win would secure their 20th consecutive Pacific Coast League title.
