University of Charleston Unveils State-of-the-Art Rehab Science and Athletics Center: A Game Changer for Students and the Community

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Charleston has launched the Morrison Rehabilitation Science and Athletics Center. This facility will support the university’s occupational and physical therapy graduate programs.

The center boasts modern therapy rooms, study areas, and lounge spaces. It also includes upgraded weight training zones and better locker facilities for visiting sports teams.

U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. She played a key role in funding the $10 million project. Capito highlighted the growing need for healthcare professionals in today’s job market. “We have a shortage in our workforce, and the University of Charleston is stepping up to meet that demand,” she said.

Capito added, “My job is to direct federal funds to support education and help recruit new talent. This facility will attract students and prepare them for jobs in the future.”

UC President Marty Roth emphasized the center’s importance for the local community. “We’re proud to innovate and offer programs that attract students and employers alike. There’s a clear need for healthcare professionals in Charleston and across West Virginia,” he said.

Jordan King, a UC volleyball player and occupational therapy student, expressed her excitement about the new facility. “This place keeps evolving. It’s becoming a standout in West Virginia, and people should want to be part of it,” she noted.

Recent studies show that healthcare jobs are expected to grow significantly in the next decade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in healthcare occupations is projected to increase by 16%, much faster than the average for all other occupations. This trend demonstrates the urgent need for more professionals in the field.

The new center aligns with this demand and aims to train students effectively. As healthcare evolves, facilities like this one will be crucial for fostering the next generation of skilled professionals.
