HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team, currently ranked third, swept Lindenwood in straight sets on Wednesday. The set scores were 25-13, 25-20, and 27-25.
The Rainbow Warriors (16-1) showcased their depth by using 14 players during the match. Senior middle blocker Zachary Thompson made his season debut. Outside hitter Clay Wieter, who transferred from Lindenwood to UH, had an impressive performance against his former team. He recorded eight kills without any errors, hitting .571. Wieter also contributed with two aces, four digs, two blocks, and the match-winning kill.
Hawai’i dominated with a hitting percentage of .522 and added five aces and 9.5 blocks. Justin Todd achieved a career-high 11 kills with an impressive hitting percentage of .714, along with two aces and five blocks. Kristian Titriyski also shined with eight kills, hitting .583 in just two sets.
The Lions (4-10) were led by Brandan Louthain, who had 10 kills.
In their first matchup since 2017, the Warriors started strong, taking a 10-2 lead in Set 1 and finishing the set with a striking .778 hitting percentage, making 14 kills in 18 attempts without errors. Wieter led the charge with four kills from five swings.
Set 2 began with Lindenwood leading 3-0 before Wieter’s second ace put Hawai’i ahead at 14-13. The Warriors responded with a flurry, including a kill and two blocks from Todd, to lead 18-14. They wrapped up the set with three aces and three blocks.
Set 3 was closely contested. With the Lions ahead 20-18, the Warriors rallied back to 23-22 after a Lion error. Wieter delivered the final blow on their third match point.
The teams will face off again on Friday at 7:00 PM at SimpliFi Arena.
