University of Memphis Tigers Shine at City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic: Two Finish in Top Ten!

Memphis, Tenn. – Freshman Leonardo Mazzoni shone at the City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic, finishing ninth and leading the Memphis Cross Country team. The men’s team took third place, while the women’s team placed sixth.

Kenny Guy, Robert Randall, and Benjamin Huey each set personal bests, with Guy and Randall finishing in the top 30. This marks their best performance at the Twilight Classic compared to previous years.

On the women’s side, Ann-Marie Braese and Reese McDevitt also landed in the top 30. Four returning runners—Braese, Brooke Doyle, Ava Beary, and Cassidy Yaley—achieved personal bests during the event.

The event highlights a trend in collegiate athletics. Over the past few years, there’s been a significant increase in student-athletes breaking personal records, reflecting improved training techniques and support systems for runners. According to a recent NCAA report, nearly 50% of college athletes reported feeling more prepared and supported than in previous years.

As the Tigers prepare for their next competition at the Rhodes Invitational on September 20, this event reinforces the hard work and dedication of both the athletes and their coaching staff.
