University of Redlands Softball Team Dominates Path to NCAA Division III World Series: What Fans Can Expect!

University of Redlands senior catcher Natalie Lowthers wasn’t ready for her softball journey to end. She shone brightly during a critical moment, hitting a grand slam that helped the Bulldogs secure a 5-4 victory over Texas Lutheran in the decisive Game 3 of their NCAA Division III super regional series in Seguin, Texas.

Despite a rocky start in the series opener, where Redlands fell 5-3 while stranding 11 runners, the team rallied. They swept both games on Friday to advance to the Women’s College World Series for the second year in a row. Redlands (43-6) now heads to Salem, Virginia, as a fifth seed, facing off against No. 4 Linfield College (42-6) on Thursday.

“It was a crazy day,” recalled Redlands coach Jose Ortega after their victorious sweep. “We knew it would be tough. Texas Lutheran pushed us to our limits, but we made enough plays to move on to the next level.”

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, Paige Ellinger and Caitlyn Griffith combined forces to hold Texas Lutheran to just four hits, leading Redlands to a 3-1 win. Ellinger allowed one run over 3 2/3 innings before Griffith sealed the deal with 3 1/3 scoreless frames.

Game 3 was a nail-biter. After Texas Lutheran took an early lead, Lowthers stepped up in the crucial third inning with her grand slam, bringing Redlands to a commanding 5-1 lead. “It’s special to come through for my team like that,” Lowthers shared. “Seeing everyone smile was a really cool moment.”

Despite their lead, Texas Lutheran fought back, narrowing the score to 5-4 in the seventh inning. Griffith, however, preserved the lead, securing her seventh save of the season.

Looking ahead, Redlands will face Linfield, a team they’ve struggled against in recent years, with Linfield winning five consecutive matchups. This latest challenge adds pressure but also excitement, as the Bulldogs aim to turn the tide.

Recent surveys show that college sports continue to be a vital part of campus life, with over 70% of students expressing pride in their teams. The camaraderie and spirit displayed in games like this help strengthen bonds among players and fans alike. With Lowthers’ impactful performance and the team’s determination, Redlands is ready to make its mark in the World Series.

This mix of teamwork and resilience demonstrates what college sports are all about: uniting for a common goal and striving for success together.
