Samsung is finally entering the PCIe Gen 5 game with its 9100 Pro series SSDs, set to launch in March. This marks Samsung’s first consumer PCIe Gen 5 SSD using NVMe 2.0. Options at launch will include 1TB for $199.99, 2TB for $299.99, and 4TB for $549.99, all available in an M.2 format. There’s even an 8TB version planned for later in 2025.
In terms of performance, the 9100 Pro boasts impressive theoretical speeds. It can achieve up to 2,200K read and 2,600K write IOPS, which is at least double that of the previous Samsung 980 Pro. While gamers might not notice a huge difference when playing, those who handle demanding tasks like video editing could benefit significantly.
For tasks that involve moving large files, the speed gains are even clearer. Samsung claims the 9100 Pro can reach sequential read speeds of up to 14.8GBps and write speeds of 13.4GBps. This is roughly double the performance of the 980 Pro and faster than many of the earlier PCIe 5 SSDs.
