OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently unveiled AgentKit during the company’s Dev Day event. This new toolkit is designed to make creating and deploying AI agents much easier for developers.
“AgentKit provides everything you need to take agents from idea to actual use,” Altman explained. This launch reflects OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing developer engagement by streamlining the process of agent building. It also positions OpenAI against other AI platforms that are eager to provide integrated tools for creating tasks that go beyond simple responses.
In addition to AgentKit, Dev Day featured new capabilities for ChatGPT, which has surged to 800 million weekly active users.
AgentKit has several key features. First is Agent Builder, which Altman likened to Canva. It offers a quick, visual way to design agent logic and workflows. This is built atop the widely-used responses API, making it accessible to many developers.
Another feature is ChatKit. This allows developers to embed chat experiences directly into their apps, tailored with their unique branding and workflows.
AgentKit also introduces Evals for Agents, a set of tools for measuring agent performance. This includes detailed grading systems, datasets to assess specific components, and capabilities for optimizing prompts and evaluating external models.
Finally, developers will appreciate the connector registry in AgentKit. This feature enables secure connections to internal tools and third-party systems, all managed through an admin panel for enhanced security.
To demonstrate its ease of use, OpenAI engineer Christina Huang created a full AI workflow with two agents in under eight minutes during the event. “This is what we needed when building our first agents,” Altman noted, highlighting that several partners are already scaling their agents using AgentKit.
As AI continues to evolve, tools like AgentKit could reshape how businesses approach automation, potentially improving efficiency across various sectors. In 2023, a report from PwC indicated that 74% of businesses are considering AI adoption to enhance productivity. As more developers embrace platforms like AgentKit, the landscape for AI applications is likely to accelerate rapidly.
