Google has big plans for your Gmail. At the recent I/O 2026 developer conference, they unveiled a new feature called Gmail Live. This tool brings conversational AI to your inbox, allowing you to ask questions in natural language instead of typing in keywords.
With Gmail Live powered by Gemini AI, finding details in your emails will be much easier. For example, if you’re searching for flight information, an Airbnb door code, or school event details, you can simply ask. No more typing frustrating search terms!
Before, you had to sift through dozens of emails, often with little success. “Gmail Live can understand follow-up questions and adapt to changes in topic,” said Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail. This makes it feel more like chatting with a friend than using a search bar.
Gmail Live won’t eliminate traditional search features. Instead, it gives users another way to locate information. Many people have experienced the frustration of losing important emails, so improving this process could make a real difference.
In a demonstration, Bhandari showcased the tool’s capabilities. She asked about her child’s school project, hotel bookings, and flight details—Gmail Live understood everything seamlessly. The AI can even pick up on context, such as distinguishing between a “field trip” and other types of trips.
This move comes amid growing skepticism about AI’s usefulness. Recent surveys show that many people are concerned about AI’s impact on their daily lives. Google hopes that making email searches easier will help convince users of AI’s benefits.
Interestingly, Google previously faced backlash after introducing AI-powered features in Google Photos and later rolled them back. This shows that they’re cautious with how they implement AI.
In addition to Gmail Live, Gmail is getting new features like instant access to files and improved task management. Soon, the AI Inbox experience will be available to more users, not just Google AI Ultra subscribers.
As this technology evolves, it will be interesting to see how users adapt and respond. For now, it seems Gmail Live could make a daily task simpler for millions.
