Aston University has taken a big step to improve job readiness for its graduates by partnering with Autodesk. This collaboration aims to give students real-world skills and experiences that can set them apart in today’s competitive job market. Notably, Aston is the first university in the UK to forge this kind of partnership.
According to Autodesk’s 2025 Design & Make report, 57% of business leaders cite a lack of skilled talent as a major hurdle to growth. By integrating Autodesk’s industry-standard software into their curriculum starting September 2025, Aston is addressing this issue directly. This software will be included in programs like architecture, engineering, and product design, giving students valuable tools for their future careers.
Mary Hope McQuiston from Autodesk emphasizes the importance of equipping students with modern tools. She states, “This partnership gives every Aston student, regardless of their field, hands-on experience with technology used globally by professionals.” This experience is crucial in preparing students for jobs that are evolving rapidly alongside technology.
The university is also launching a student ambassador program. Eight students will advocate for the use of Autodesk software, helping their fellow classmates maximize its potential. This initiative will benefit about 5,000 students in Aston’s College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
Professor Aleks Subic, Aston’s Vice-Chancellor, sees this collaboration as vital for preparing students for a fast-paced world. He believes that such programs will equip graduates with essential professional skills. Echoing this, Dr. Timothy Whitehead, Head of the Department of Design, Technology, and Innovation, highlights that all Aston students will now have access to top-tier design tools. This means students across disciplines can gain expertise in 3D modeling and visualization, enhancing their digital skills.
Autodesk’s commitment to providing its software for free to global students reflects a broader effort to foster education in key industries. They already support over 100 million students and teachers worldwide, making impactful resources accessible.
Aston University is also expanding its reach with the upcoming launch of Aston University London in spring 2025. This new campus will focus on high-demand fields such as data science, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, further preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow.
