The Success and Opportunities Expo is set to take place at Elon University on March 28, 2024, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall. This annual event aims to provide students with valuable resources for academic support, opportunities, and potential financial aid.
Organized by the Center for Access and Success and the Center for Engaged Learning, the expo brings together various campus organizations to help students navigate their academic paths. It aligns with Elon’s strategic plan, Boldly Elon 2030, which emphasizes the importance of engaged learning and mentorship in enhancing student experiences.
Sabrina Thurman, an associate professor of psychology, plays a key role in the expo’s development. She recently highlighted, in a blog post, the benefits of such events, particularly for first-generation college students. "Elon provides various high-impact academic experiences that can significantly benefit students, especially those from historically underserved backgrounds," she stated.
Research shows that students who participate in engaged learning activities are more likely to persist in their studies. A study by The American Association of Colleges and Universities found that students involved in high-impact practices, such as mentorship and internships, tend to have higher graduation rates and career outcomes.
At the expo, students can explore up to three "adventure pathways." These pathways focus on topics like integrating learning experiences at Elon, building supportive mentoring networks, and enhancing student success. Attendees will also have the chance to connect with representatives from various campus services, including counseling, global education, and undergraduate research, who are eager to share insights and opportunities available to students.
The event not only seeks to inform but also aims to foster connections that can support students throughout their academic journeys. Thurman emphasizes that the fair aims to help all students discover the resources and financial awards that could aid in their academic pursuits.

Whether you’re a first-year student or nearing graduation, the Success and Opportunities Expo offers a fantastic chance to explore how you can enhance your college experience.
