Topeka, Kan. — Washburn University is introducing two exciting Computer Information Sciences (CIS) certificates starting in Fall 2025. The first is an Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Application Certificate and the second is a Cybersecurity Certificate. Dr. Nan Sun, chair of the CIS department, highlights that this is the first interdisciplinary AI program in Kansas that doesn’t require prior coding experience. The Cybersecurity Certificate is designed for those looking to deepen their expertise in protecting digital information. According to a report by Hanover Research, there’s a significant demand for cybersecurity professionals. Jobs in this field are expected to grow three times faster than the average for all occupations. This program will prepare students to fill the growing talent gap in Kansas and beyond.

Dr. John Fritch, Washburn’s provost, emphasizes the university’s commitment to offering affordable, quality education tailored to current job market needs. A report from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce forecasts that by 2031, 72% of U.S. jobs will require post-secondary education and training. This trend underscores the importance of programs like those offered at Washburn, which provide pathways to meaningful careers.
