Unlock Your Potential: The Ultimate Guide to the Mission Priority Examen

Dear LMU Community,

As the academic year wraps up, we want to share some updates about the Mission Priority Examen (MPE). Thank you for your contributions to helping Loyola Marymount University stay true to its mission.

We recognize that while our mission inspires many of you, it has also caused disappointment and frustration for some. We’ve heard concerns about times when the university doesn’t reflect our values. Many have expressed feelings of mistrust. Yet, amidst these feelings, there is a strong commitment to our mission as a Catholic university rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. You’ve shared hopes for creating a more inclusive and equitable community. The MPE is an opportunity to define priorities that can help us live out our mission more fully.

The Mission Priority Examen committee has been working since the start of the year to pinpoint two or three priorities that will guide LMU over the next seven years. To make informed decisions, we have analyzed key documents that articulate our mission, reviewed insights from various stakeholders, and engaged President Poon’s goals for education and inclusivity.

This led us to frame three key questions, which we used to guide 28 listening sessions across the university in April:

  • How can LMU better embody its mission through education and student experiences?
  • How can we promote justice and support all community members, especially those from marginalized backgrounds?
  • How can LMU engage more effectively with the local community and the Catholic Church?

The committee is now reviewing responses from these sessions and feedback from 250 participants who filled out our survey. We appreciate everyone who joined us, as your insights are vital for crafting our mission advancement strategies.

In the coming weeks, we’ll streamline the feedback into a few clear mission priorities. These priorities will aim to remain relevant while also promoting concrete actions. They will be unveiled in a report available at the start of the new academic year. Additionally, from September 20-23, a team of leaders from other Catholic institutions will visit us to engage in further discussions about how we can effectively implement these priorities.

We’ll keep you posted on our progress with the MPE in the months ahead. Thank you for your involvement in this important process of self-reflection.

Sincerely,
