Isaac Schultz from Gizmodo discusses a troubling issue: the rise of AI-generated junk science on Google Scholar. A recent study published in the Harvard Misinformation Review reveals that many research papers may not be as reliable as we think, thanks to generative AI like ChatGPT.

The researchers found that about two-thirds of the papers they examined involved some use of AI tools. Among these, approximately 14.5% were related to health, 19.5% to the environment, and 23% to computing. Alarmingly, some of these questionable papers appeared in well-known scientific journals and conferences.

According to the study, academic journals are seeing more dubious research produced with AI. These papers often mimic real scientific work but lack the rigorous checks typically required for trustworthy research. As a result, Google Scholar presents these unreliable papers alongside valid, peer-reviewed studies. This situation poses risks, especially in sensitive areas like health and the environment, where incorrect information can have serious consequences.

Schultz emphasizes that while Google Scholar is user-friendly, it doesn’t filter out lower-quality work. This means that research lacking proper scientific backing can slip through the cracks. The site pulls various types of content, including student papers and preprints, alongside more credible studies, making it challenging for users to discern what is trustworthy.

This creates a paradox: those who want to advance scientific knowledge might unintentionally spread misinformation, particularly in heated political debates. This issue highlights the importance of critical thinking when consuming scientific research.
