Unlocking Climate Literacy: Join Periyar University’s Insightful Workshop in Salem!

Periyar University in Salem hosted a workshop focused on climate literacy, attracting over 175 teachers from local schools. This initiative, organized by the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management (CCCDRM) and the Environmental Science department, aimed to educate educators involved in eco-clubs and environmental projects backed by the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission.

During the workshop, participants exchanged ideas about green practices and discussed avenues for further environmental involvement. K. Jayaraman, the dean of the College Development Council, opened the event, while Vice-Chancellor R. Jagannathan highlighted the crucial distinction between weather and climate, stressing how consumer habits impact our environment today.

P. Thangavel, director of CCCDRM, emphasized the need for teachers and students to grasp climate change and its local implications. He stressed that such understanding is key to building sustainable and climate-resilient communities. D. Arulbalachandran, deputy director of the university’s campus development center, pointed out that climate literacy is vital for preparing individuals to handle climate challenges effectively, particularly as the state aims for net zero emissions by 2050.

Interestingly, a 2023 survey found that about 70% of educators believe climate education is essential for students. This reflects a growing understanding of the importance of teaching young people about environmental issues. Social media trends also show a rise in discussions around climate action, especially among the younger generations who advocate for sustainable practices.

In a nutshell, workshops like this one are crucial. They equip teachers with the knowledge to pass on to students, making them key players in the fight against climate change. As individuals become more aware of their environmental impact, communities can work together towards a sustainable future.
