But this isn’t just about listening. The team is also working on replicating dolphin sounds. They use smartphones to play these sounds in the wild, observing if dolphins respond and associate them with specific objects. For example, the aim might be to see if dolphins react to certain types of seaweed when they hear a particular sound.

If this approach proves effective, it could lead to two-way communication—transforming what we know about marine life. This could enhance our understanding of dolphins’ needs and behaviors, benefitting conservation efforts and ecological insights.

While many see dolphins as friendly creatures, some experts caution that we might not always like what they have to say. Reports of aggressive behavior, such as attacks on swimmers, suggest a more complex side to dolphin personalities.
