Unlocking Economic Benefits: Why Embracing Sustainable Farming is Smart for Our Future

As the Minister for Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs, I have a vital role. My focus is on agriculture, climate change, animal welfare, and rural issues. These areas are essential for the health of our society, economy, and environment.

We need to build a successful future by harmonizing economic growth with environmental protection. These two goals can support each other.

Northern Ireland faces a challenge. We must connect our economic ambitions with ecological needs. If we neglect the environment, it can hurt sectors like farming and tourism. But, if we address these challenges together, we can ensure our agriculture will thrive. We also have opportunities to create green jobs and protect our natural resources.

Restoring our environment will take time. It’s a complex issue not just for us but for governments worldwide. If we aim high, we can improve life quality, boost our economy, and protect nature.

At DAERA, we are seizing these opportunities. We’ve launched several “firsts” for Northern Ireland, including the Environmental Improvement Plan and the action plan for Lough Neagh. We’ve also secured a dedicated budget for agriculture, which is a significant achievement.

Farming and agri-food contribute £1.6 billion to our economy and provide about 78,400 jobs. By nurturing our environment and addressing climate change, we can assure a sustainable future for agriculture.

In our new Sustainable Agriculture Programme (SAP), I’ve secured £330 million in funding for farmers—something no other UK region has achieved. We’re focused on producing high-quality food while preserving resources for future farmers. Collaboration with farmers, environmentalists, and industry stakeholders is crucial to making a positive impact.

Lough Neagh, our water quality, and other environmental issues are interconnected. Clean water, healthy food, and thriving biodiversity are essential to our survival and well-being. Ignoring these needs risks our future and economic growth.

To build a greener future, we need strong governance. An independent panel I established is working to improve our environmental governance. Their findings will help us take necessary actions to protect our environment more effectively.

While the changes ahead may seem overwhelming, every day we wait to act raises the stakes for our economy and the planet. Collective change is crucial. Together, we can pave the way for a better, more prosperous future.

Data from recent surveys shows that 72% of people in Northern Ireland believe sustainable agriculture is crucial for our economy. Engaging communities and listening to diverse perspectives can help meet these goals.

In the end, we can strike a balance between our economic ambitions and the need to protect our environment. Working together, we can make real strides toward a healthier and more sustainable future.
