Unlocking Insights on Climate Change: Adair Turner and the Grantham Research Institute

Lord Turner is a key figure in shaping our approach to climate change and finance. He leads the Energy Transitions Commission, which brings together major companies, investors, and experts to find pathways to limit global warming to below 2˚C by 2040. This initiative aims to foster economic growth and social progress while addressing urgent environmental challenges.

Additionally, Lord Turner is the chairman of Chubb Europe, an insurance group, and Oaknorth Bank, which supports small and medium-sized businesses in the UK. He also serves on the board of AESC Japan, a battery production company, and has been an advisor to Watershed Technologies since 2023.

From 2008 to 2013, Lord Turner chaired the UK’s Financial Services Authority. This was a critical time, as he helped guide the country through its response to the Global Financial Crisis, focusing on better regulation of banks and financial institutions. His experience in public policy is extensive; he has led initiatives like the UK Low Pay Commission and the Pensions Commission. In 2009, he helped the UK government adopt key recommendations from the Climate Change Committee’s report, “Building a Low-Carbon Economy”. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 2006.

Before these roles, he spent years at McKinsey & Company and served on various boards, including Merrill Lynch Europe and Standard Chartered. His insights on economics and finance are well-regarded, as seen in his books “Between Debt and the Devil” and “Economics after the Crisis”. He also writes regularly for both UK and international publications.

In 2017, Cambridge University awarded him an Honorary Degree. He is also a Trustee Emeritus of the British Museum and an honorary fellow of The Royal Society.

Lord Turner’s research interests include:

  • Energy transition to net-zero emissions
  • Demography
  • Macro-economics
  • Monetary theory

His focus on the energy transition is particularly timely. Recent studies indicate that the world will need to invest over $4 trillion annually by 2030 to combat climate change effectively. This aligns with Lord Turner’s vision for a sustainable future that balances economic development and environmental responsibility.

As society increasingly demands action on climate change, leaders like Lord Turner are essential. His work and insights help guide us toward a cleaner, more responsible economic future.
