Sheryl Lee Ralph is joyfully marking 19 years of marriage to her husband, Vincent Hughes, a Pennsylvania State Senator. Their secret to a lasting relationship might surprise you: they live apart.
In a recent interview with People, Ralph shared that they first met while she was starring in the Broadway musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” She explains that they maintain their own individual lives, careers, and passions.
“He has his own life. I have my own life,” Ralph said. “He is not focused on my status, and I’m not concerned with his. We both have our paths.”
Living separately has its advantages. Ralph expressed, “When I visit him, I love being there. But when it’s time to leave, I say, ‘Bye-bye. See you soon!’ It feels perfect.” This setup allows her to embrace her role as a wife while still being herself.
Ralph elaborated on how their arrangement came to be. They realized early on that their careers wouldn’t allow them to relocate easily. With her two children from a previous marriage, moving wasn’t practical.
“I stayed in California, and he stayed in Philadelphia,” she recalled. “Every couple of weeks, we saw each other. It has worked for us, and we’re anticipating celebrating 20 years of marriage soon. It’s wonderful, especially since many couples struggle to make it through even two years.”
