Unlocking Multilingual Learning: IGNOU Joins Forces with IIT Bombay for AI-Enhanced Education

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is teaming up with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to launch Project Udaan, an innovative AI-driven translation platform. This project aims to make academic resources available in multiple Indian languages.

This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes multilingual education and equal learning opportunities. Project Udaan uses advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to translate complex academic material while maintaining its original format and readability.

Professor Ganesh Ramakrishnan from IIT Bombay emphasized the project’s goal of addressing India’s linguistic diversity. He said, “Project Udaan is a step towards breaking down language barriers and ensuring education is inclusive for all.”

With IGNOU’s extensive collection of study materials, students from rural areas and those who don’t speak English will greatly benefit. This collaboration also aligns with national initiatives such as Digital India and Bharat Bhasha, which aim to promote Indian languages in digital environments.
