The Indian Navy has recently welcomed the ‘Sanshodhak,’ a cutting-edge survey vessel, marking a significant advancement in India’s maritime capabilities. This ship is the last of four vessels under the Survey Vessel (Large) program, delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata.
The delivery represents a major step forward in enhancing India’s hydrographic surveying, oceanographic research, and navigational safety. It aligns with the country’s goal of becoming self-reliant in defense manufacturing, known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
This program began in October 2018, culminating in the addition of:
- INS Sandhayak
- INS Nirdeshak
- INS Ikshak
- Sanshodhak
With Sanshodhak now operational, the Indian Navy has a modern fleet of survey vessels ready to support both military missions and civilian maritime projects.
Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and compliant with Indian Register of Shipping standards, Sanshodhak is equipped for various essential tasks:
- Conducting coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys
- Mapping ports and safe navigation routes
- Gathering oceanographic and geophysical data
These tasks are vital for ensuring safe navigation for commercial and naval vessels and for planning port developments. The vessel uses advanced technology, including:
- Data acquisition systems
- Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
- Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)
- High-precision sonar systems
Sanshodhak weighs approximately 3,400 tonnes, stretches 110 meters long, and achieves speeds over 18 knots, powered by twin diesel engines. It underwent rigorous testing to ensure reliability.
The ship’s rapid construction reflects India’s efficiency in defense projects. Laid down in June 2022, it was launched just a year later, boasting over 80% indigenous content in both design and manufacturing.
Moreover, many small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and various Indian partners contributed to this project, strengthening the local defense industry and creating jobs.
