Unlocking the College Football Preseason Coaches Poll: The Top 25 Teams Overranked and Underrated!

The SEC is dominating the 2025 preseason Coaches Poll, with nine teams making the cut. Texas takes the top spot, edging out Ohio State and Penn State. Texas, fresh off a strong season that ended in the playoff semifinals, received 28 first-place votes.

This year’s rankings promise an exciting opener with Texas visiting Ohio State on August 30. Other SEC teams in the top 25 include Georgia at No. 4, Alabama at No. 8, and LSU at No. 9.

The Big Ten isn’t far behind, landing six teams in the rankings. Ohio State and Penn State start strong at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Notre Dame, last year’s playoff runner-up, kicks off at No. 5, with Clemson rounding out the top 10 after a successful season.

Five teams from the Big 12 made the list, with Arizona State leading the pack at No. 11. Meanwhile, Boise State represents the Group of 5 schools at No. 25.

Looking back, preseason polls often reflect last season’s performance. For example, last year’s top-ranked Georgia finished sixth by the end. Programs can rise or fall quickly, as seen with teams like Florida State, which started at No. 10 but ended with a 2-10 record.

Who’s Underrated?

Clemson at No. 6: With elite quarterback Cade Klubnik leading the way, Clemson has potential for a great season. He threw for over 3,600 yards last year and only six interceptions. Their defense also looks strong, featuring standout players like Peter Woods.

Illinois at No. 12: Having 16 starters back from a 10-win season, Illinois can’t be overlooked. Quarterback Luke Altmyer proved he can handle pressure with multiple game-winning drives.

Kansas State at No. 20: The Wildcats have a dynamic quarterback in Avery Johnson. A tough opening matchup against Iowa State in Dublin could set the tone for their season.

Who’s Overrated?

Ohio State at No. 2: While talent is undeniable, the Buckeyes face challenges. They’re returning only six starters, with many key players leaving for the NFL, including their entire starting defensive line.

Texas A&M at No. 21: Historically, they often start strong but stumble. While new QB Marcel Reed shows promise, the Aggies need to prove they can sustain success.

Michigan at No. 14: With a defense that led the team last season, losing key players may put them at a disadvantage. They may come in lower this year, especially with a freshman quarterback starting.

Preseason polls are always a mixed bag of hype and reality. Only time will tell which teams will live up to expectations.
