Unlocking the Connection: How LifeWays Improves Mental Health Through Physical Activity

At LifeWays, wellness is a personal journey. Based in Jackson and Hillsdale counties, LifeWays is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic that offers thoughtful mental health and substance use services tailored for individuals and families.

Wellness coaches Brandon Knapp and Pam Swafford lead community members in developing healthier lifestyles through holistic practices. Swafford points out, “Mental wellness and physical activity are closely linked.” They aim to offer various classes to help everyone achieve their best lives.

The strength of LifeWays’ programs is evident in community feedback. Participants have shared feelings of increased strength and confidence after engaging in offerings like Wellness Wednesdays and Stress Less. The popularity of these initiatives in Jackson has led to expansions in Hillsdale.

LifeWays emphasizes the eight dimensions of wellness: emotional, environmental, intellectual, financial, occupational, physical, spiritual, and social. This framework allows individuals to identify what truly matters to them.

Knapp and Swafford enjoy their roles as coaches, assisting participants in defining their paths to well-being. Each person’s journey is unique, and they start by asking, “What does a healthy lifestyle look like to you?” This personalized approach fosters a supportive environment.

Wellness Wednesdays combine education, movement, and community spirit. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday, participants gather for lessons on nutrition, guided fitness classes, and healthy meals. The goal is to promote sustainable habits rather than quick fixes. Many who join these sessions find themselves eager to continue after completing the program.

“It’s not just about weight,” Knapp says. “Small, consistent changes can lead to significant health improvements.” He recognizes that many participants initially think weight loss is their main goal, often due to widespread misconceptions.

The Stress Less sessions, offered every Thursday, provide additional support for managing stress through music and art therapy. Swafford highlights how stress can affect both mental and physical health, making it essential to address under LifeWays’ holistic approach.

Participants are encouraged to be patient with themselves. Knapp emphasizes, “It’s a long journey, and often people underestimate what they can achieve.”

LifeWays’ programs are open to the public, allowing many to find approaches that resonate with them. This fosters a supportive community where progress is celebrated.
