A T-shirt with the phrase “ALL DRESSED UP NOWHERE TO GO” took the spotlight at a recent fashion show in Mumbai. Slogan T-shirts are trending, and designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is on a mission to put India on the luxury fashion map.
As ‘Sabyasachi’ celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Kolkata-based designer is paving new paths for Indian fashion. After a break from runway shows since 2016, he launched a fresh collection, honoring his journey and marking a significant moment in the global luxury scene.
Luxury that’s ready to wear
Sabyasachi has revitalized the saree and traditional clothing for Indian women, offering a stylish counter to Western fashion. When Bollywood stars wear his sarees, they spark a strong desire among fans to own one. This revival has not only brought the saree back into the spotlight but has also supported local artisans. Indian brides are eagerly awaiting the chance to wear Sabyasachi’s exquisite designs on their big day.
There’s a new approach to bridal fashion in Sabyasachi’s vision. He believes that it’s no longer just about lehengas and sarees. Today’s women are diverse: career-focused, pet owners, or fashion-forward enthusiasts. His latest collection caters to them all, showcasing ready-to-wear luxury that reflects the evolving preferences of modern women.
Sabyasachi highlights that his slogan T-shirts are more than just catchy phrases; they are a reflection of our times. He notes, “People today often buy clothes to showcase online. This trend shows a sense of emptiness in our tech-driven lives. True luxury comes from human craftsmanship, not technology.”
A collection full of choices
The new global line features a wide variety of ready-to-wear items like dresses, coats, and leather skirts. Each piece showcases traditional Indian craftsmanship, with intricate stitching and semi-precious stone details. The luxurious linings of the coats and jackets add a touch of elegance, while floral motifs on jackets and sarees create eye-catching 3D designs. The brand’s Bengal tiger logo adorns the linings of leather skirts, reinforcing its identity.
For the first time, the collection will also include accessories made from ostrich leather. Launching in September, this collection will be available both in India and internationally. Sabyasachi believes that while minimalism may be popular worldwide, India should celebrate its rich, maximalist heritage. His creative vision aims to redefine global luxury fashion by drawing inspiration from Indian traditions.
