Unlocking the Future: Steve Spagnuolo’s Role in the New York Jets’ Coaching Carousel

The New York Jets are on the hunt for a new head coach in 2025. Under Robert Saleh, the team struggled, failing to achieve a winning season or a playoff appearance in four years. This opens the door for the Jets to explore new coaching talent, starting a fresh chapter.

Among the candidates, we have Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. Jets fans may remember him from his time as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, where he played a crucial role in their Super Bowl victory in 2007. That year, his defense ranked among the best in the league, finishing in the top 10 in several key statistics and leading the NFL in sacks. His aggressive defensive style helped the Giants clinch the championship, making him a sought-after candidate for head coaching roles the following season.

Spagnuolo decided to stay with the Giants for one more year. In 2008, his defense remained solid, allowing an average of 18.4 points per game. The Giants finished the season with a strong 12-4 record, but their playoff run ended early when they lost in the divisional round.

In 2009, Spagnuolo accepted his first head coaching job with the St. Louis Rams. Unfortunately, that season was difficult, with the team finishing 1-15. The Rams allowed nearly 400 yards per game, and their scoring average was one of the lowest in the league. Though the Rams improved to a 7-9 record in 2010, the team floundered again in 2011, with a dismal 2-14 record. Ultimately, Spagnuolo’s tenure with the Rams ended with a 10-38 record, making it a challenging period in his career.

After leaving St. Louis, Spagnuolo rebounded by joining the New Orleans Saints as their defensive coordinator. He later worked as an interim head coach for the Giants in 2019, finishing with a 1-3 record. Now, with the Kansas City Chiefs, he’s contributed to their success, helping them win multiple Super Bowls as part of one of the league’s top defenses.

So, would Jets Wire consider hiring him? The answer is likely no. Despite his past successes as a coordinator, his head coaching record is concerning. With just 11 wins against 41 losses as a head coach and a history of struggle in that role, Spagnuolo seems much more effective running defensive schemes than leading a team. His lack of interest from teams for head coaching roles since the Rams raises additional doubts.

In this search for a new head coach, it seems unlikely that the Jets will prioritize Spagnuolo. They will likely explore other options to find someone who can lead the team to success.
