On December 24, 2024, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe achieved a remarkable milestone. It became the fastest human-made object ever, reaching a speed of 692,000 kilometers per hour (430,000 miles per hour) during its closest approach to the Sun. Think about it: at that speed, you could cross the entire United States in less than 24 seconds!

This probe has been on an incredible journey. It beat its previous record of 635,266 kilometers per hour (394,736 miles per hour) set in 2023. But how fast have humans traveled?

When comparing speeds, Earth itself is zooming through space at about 152 million kilometers per hour (94 million miles per hour) as it orbits the Sun. The fastest speed reached by humans is 39,937.7 kilometers per hour (24,816.1 miles per hour). This record was set back on May 26, 1969, during Apollo 10, not Apollo 11 as many might believe.

Apollo 10 was a practice run for the Moon landing, testing all spacecraft procedures without actually landing on the Moon. Astronauts Thomas Stafford, John Young, and Eugene Cernan launched on May 18, 1969. They orbited the Moon and, while reentering Earth’s atmosphere, hit that impressive speed. Cernan later described the fiery descent as feeling like “a ball of white and violet flame.”

Since then, that record remains unbroken. The Apollo 10 crew used Earth’s atmosphere and three large parachutes to land safely in the Pacific Ocean, highlighting the ingenuity involved in space travel.
