A team led by Xuexue Liu and Ludovic Orlando from the Center for Anthropology and Genomics in Toulouse analyzed DNA from ancient horse remains. They focused on 266 genetic markers linked to traits like coat color and behavior.

During the early domestication, around 5,000 years ago, one notable finding was a genetic region associated with the ZFPM1 gene. This gene relates to tameness. Researchers believe that early breeders selected horses that were friendlier and easier to manage.

Another significant discovery involved the GSDMC locus, which affects a horse’s body structure and movement. In tests with mice, scientists altered this region’s DNA. The mice became stronger and moved better, similar to how genetic changes led to the rideable horse.

“Our findings show that selection at the GSDMC locus was key in developing the modern domestic horse,” the researchers noted. This genetic shift allowed for better mobility, revolutionizing horse usage around 4,200 years ago.

Experts agree that understanding these genetic shifts is essential. Further research is needed to explore the tameness gene’s full effects, alongside how multiple genes have shaped horse evolution. There’s a growing interest in how horses adapted to different environments.
