Unveiling Bharat Gen: India’s Revolutionary Indigenous Multimodal AI Language Model

On June 2, 2025, the Bharat Gen model was launched, marking an exciting chapter for artificial intelligence (AI) in India. This innovative multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) was unveiled by Union Minister Jitendra Singh at the BharatGen Summit. It aims to make AI more inclusive, ethical, and representative of India’s diverse languages and cultures.

Bharat Gen is developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) through the TIH Foundation, based out of IIT Bombay. This initiative collaborates with various top academic institutions and experts, showcasing India’s commitment to advancing technology.

One of Bharat Gen’s standout features is its multilingual capability. The model can process text, speech, and images in 22 different Indian languages, setting a new standard for government-funded AI projects. Singh emphasized its potential to improve key sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, providing tailored solutions based on regional needs.

An interesting real-world application of Bharat Gen involves AI-powered telemedicine. An AI doctor can communicate in a patient’s native language, which not only fosters trust but also enhances care for those in remote areas. Singh pointed out that this approach can lead to better health outcomes.

Looking at the broader context, India’s AI advancements have become a point of reference globally. Systems like CPGRAMS, which streamline grievance redressal, are now studied in other countries as exemplary models.

This initiative is supported by a network of 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs), helping to foster entrepreneurship and international collaboration. Bharat Gen is underpinned by four core pillars: technology development, entrepreneurship, human resource development, and global partnerships.

According to a recent survey by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), India aims to reach $1 trillion in the digital economy by 2025. This ambition highlights the importance of developments like Bharat Gen in achieving those goals.
