A few weeks ago, I attended a special preview of the new Magic: The Gathering set, Edge of Eternities. Exciting cards are coming, and I’m thrilled to share what I learned!
New Mechanics: Spacecraft and Station
This set introduces some cool new terms: Spacecraft and Station. Spacecraft is a new type of Artifact, while Station is an activated ability.
When you activate a Station, you tap an untapped creature you control (not the Spacecraft itself) during your main phase. This allows the Spacecraft to gather charge counters based on the creature’s power. Some Planets also have Station abilities, unlocking additional mana when activated.
Warp: Fast Forward Your Game
The Warp mechanic lets you get cards onto the battlefield more quickly. This is similar to fast travel in sci-fi stories. For example, cards with Warp can be cast and then exiled after the turn ends. They often come with beneficial effects when entering the battlefield. This adds a layer of quick strategy, making gameplay more dynamic.
The Void Awaits
Void is another new mechanic, triggered when a permanent leaves the battlefield or a card is warped. It’s similar to the “Morbid” ability from Innistrad but includes more possibilities. This mechanic opens doors to creative combinations, emphasizing the importance of exile in gameplay, fitting well with the sci-fi theme.
Lander Tokens: Your Space Companion
Lander Tokens are a delightful addition. Described as your guide when exploring new planets, these tokens help you search for basic lands, adding a fun flavor to the game. They’re colorless artifacts that enhance your resource management strategy.
Slivers Make a Comeback
Fans will be thrilled to hear that Slivers are returning! These unique creatures have always sparked excitement and fear alike. Their comeback means new strategies and combinations for players to explore.
Visual Style: A Treat for the Eyes
The artwork in Edge of Eternities is inspired by various sci-fi themes, from vintage book covers to modern graphics. Special art treatments in Collector Boosters add more visual flair, making this set stand out. It’s clear that the design team is having a lot of fun with these creative choices.
Conclusion
Edge of Eternities introduces fresh mechanics and stunning artwork, promising to engage both new players and veterans. Keep an eye out for its official release to explore these new adventures in Magic: The Gathering. For more details, check out the official MTG site.
