PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A tip from a man who had a surprising encounter on the sidewalk outside Brown University played a crucial role in solving a tragic case. This tip helped the police identify a suspect linked to a shooting that claimed two students’ lives and later the life of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor.
The man, referred to as “John” in police documents, gave investigators key information that led them to the suspect, 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha praised John’s contribution, stating it was a major turning point in the case.
Just days after the shooting at Brown, there was a feeling of anxiety and frustration in the community as police struggled to find leads. Then, on the sixth day of the investigation, they discovered the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
John had interacted with Neves Valente multiple times before the shooting. He recognized him from police released images and shared his suspicions on Reddit, where users encouraged him to report his findings to the FBI. Within three days, the police had a tip that linked a grey Nissan to the suspect, helping them connect the dots through city surveillance footage.
John described an unsettling encounter with Neves Valente in the bathroom of the engineering building before the attack. He noted that Valente’s clothing seemed strange for that weather. The two had several unsettling interactions, which John later referred to as a “game of cat and mouse.” Their exchanges showed Valente’s odd behavior; at one point, he questioned John, saying, “I don’t know you from nobody.”
Interestingly, John’s insights not only pulled the investigation together but sparked a conversation on social media about the role of citizen reports in crime-solving. Many believe that everyday people can significantly contribute to law enforcement when they recognize something unusual.
As for John, it’s uncertain if he will receive the $50,000 reward offered by the FBI for information about the original shooting. Ted Docks, an FBI special agent, hinted that John’s actions certainly made him a candidate for the reward.
