On May 17, skywatchers were treated to a surprising spectacle: a geomagnetic storm and a bright white streak cutting through the auroras. The storm, rated G2, kicked off unexpectedly due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, which scientists initially thought would miss Earth. Instead, the CME hit us four days after its release during a massive solar eruption.

The standout moment came with a dazzling light show over Colorado and surrounding areas. It was initially mistaken for a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as STEVE, which sometimes accompanies the northern lights. However, it turned out to be a different story.

Photographer Mike Lewinski described the sight: “The aurora was shimmering low when a bright streak, like a rocket re-entry, appeared overhead.” He managed to capture this stunning event in Crestone, Colorado.

The source of the white plume? A Chinese rocket launch. Landscape, a Chinese company, had just sent the Zhuque-2E rocket into orbit, carrying six satellites, including a radar spacecraft. The streak observed was likely from a fuel dump as the rocket adjusted its orbit, according to expert Jonathan McDowell, who verified this information via social media.

One skywatcher, Derick Wilson, recorded his own experience, noting, “The aurora was colorless, and then the brightest sight I’ve ever seen lit up the sky!” He shared his astonishment online, resonating with many others who witnessed this stunning sight.

Tyler Schlitt, another photographer, was also captivated by the event from southern Kansas. Like many, he initially thought it was another instance of STEVE, only to learn it was a rocket launch. Schlitt reflected on how strange it was to witness such a phenomenon again, recalling a similar event from the previous year.
