CLARKSVILLE, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) recently unveiled the Sara and Mike Gotcher Theatre in a heartfelt ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 22. This theatre honors Dr. Mike Gotcher and his late wife, Sara, both of whom dedicated themselves to APSU and the arts.
Kris Phillips, APSU’s vice president for Alumni, Engagement, and Philanthropy, expressed the significance of the theatre, calling it a lasting symbol of the Gotchers’ commitment to education and the arts. Dr. Mike Licari, APSU President, shared how vital the arts are for nurturing skills like creativity and empathy. He noted that this gift comes at a crucial time for the university, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded education.
Mike Gotcher’s connection with APSU spans decades. He has held multiple roles, from professor to interim dean, and has received special honors, including the Richard M. Hawkins Award. His work has shaped the university’s landscape significantly.
Sara Gotcher also made an impact through initiatives like “Project 101,” which examined the effects of military deployment on families at Fort Campbell. Dr. Buzz Hoon, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, highlighted how the new professorships, named in honor of the Gotchers, will help attract top faculty and enhance students’ learning experiences in theatre, dance, and communications.
The new theatre aims to be a vibrant space for creativity, offering the community a chance to engage with live performances. This commitment to the arts solidifies Austin Peay’s role as a cultural hub for Clarksville and the surrounding area.
Statistics show that universities with strong arts programs see benefits beyond creative skills. Studies indicate that students involved in the arts typically perform better academically and develop critical thinking skills. For instance, a report from the Arts Education Partnership found that students engaged in arts learning improved their academic performance by as much as 20%.
This new venue not only enriches APSU’s offerings but also strengthens community bonds through shared cultural experiences. As the theatre opens its doors, it promises to foster a newfound appreciation for the arts in the region.
