The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) highlights the ongoing struggle for press freedom in the country, especially under the Marcos Jr. administration. This year, they reported 242 media freedom violations, with about 43% linked to government forces. Disturbingly, ten journalists have been killed, revealing the severe risks media workers face. Even when cases are investigated, justice often seems out of reach.
Take the tragic case of RJ Ledesma. The military falsely claimed he was a combatant to justify his murder. Similarly, Frenchie Mae Cumpio remains in jail on dubious charges after being labeled a terrorist supporter, showing a troubling trend of red-tagging—a practice where journalists are accused of being linked to communist insurgents.
Red-tagging incidents have surged since June 2016, but calls to dismantle the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict have gone unheard. Notably, a UN ruling in 2024 stated that red-tagging threatens life and liberty, yet it hasn’t prompted the government to act.
Moreover, libel and privacy laws are weaponized against journalists. For instance, two female reporters faced cyber libel charges in separate incidents, with threats from politicians aimed at stifling critical coverage. Other forms of harassment include physical attacks, surveillance, and online abuse. A report from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) noted that these tactics create a chilling effect, stifling free speech and press freedom.
The failure to implement key recommendations from UN experts, including addressing media killings and decriminalizing libel, underscores a broader climate of impunity. In this environment, simply enhancing safety measures for journalists won’t be enough.
The struggle for truth is often intertwined with power dynamics. Those in authority may wish to control narratives for their gain. Journalists remain committed to uncovering the truth, empowering the public to demand accountability.
Recent surveys show that a significant portion of the population supports press freedom, demonstrating a collective desire for transparency and truth. Social media trends reveal increasing public outrage against attacks on journalists, making the fight for press freedom not just a struggle for journalists, but a stand for democracy itself.
