For a time, it didn’t seem like Double Fine was thriving under Microsoft’s leadership. Known for quirky titles like Brütal Legend and Broken Age, the studio only released a sequel to Psychonauts after being acquired in 2019. However, things have changed. Last year, they launched the charmingly bizarre Keeper, a game featuring a sentient lighthouse. Recently, they introduced Kiln, a vibrant multiplayer brawler with lovable spirits and a pottery twist.
At its essence, Kiln is a 4v4 game where teams compete to gather water and extinguish the other team’s kiln. The match’s goal is straightforward: douse your opponent’s kiln first to secure victory. Unlike complex games like League of Legends, Kiln simplifies gameplay with clear objectives. There’s no grinding for experience points or leveling up—just a fast-paced skirmish where players navigate the map while splashing water and launching attacks.
What sets Kiln apart is its pottery theme. Players control cute spirits that must inhabit pots to compete. Each pot acts like a character class, varying in size and strength. Bigger pots can absorb damage but hold less water, while smaller, fragile pots are great for offensive strategies.
One of the most enjoyable features is the creative aspect of crafting these pots. Players use a virtual pottery wheel to mold their characters, giving them a personal touch. As you progress, you unlock various customizations, from quirky add-ons to colorful glazes. You can create multiple pots, but each match allows you to bring three. This leads to strategic choices since different pots offer different skills.
The matches are pure chaos. Even the sturdiest pots can shatter quickly, creating a thrilling balance between aggression and defense. With simple controls—an attack, a special move, and the ability to roll or jump—play remains frantic and engaging. Matches are brief, with quick respawns, ensuring there’s always action.
The level designs add to the fun. Each map features unique elements, like rotating boats and conveyor belts, which keep gameplay fresh. For instance, one stage includes a disco floor, where players caught on certain tiles find themselves dancing uncontrollably for a moment.
While Kiln doesn’t fit into the shooter genre, it shares a playful spirit with games like Splatoon, making the competitive multiplayer experience accessible and enjoyable. Teamwork is essential, but communication isn’t necessary to succeed. Players can easily switch between offense and defense, making matches feel like a chaotic game of basketball.
Currently, Kiln offers only one game mode. Although it’s entertaining, more variety could enhance the experience.
Overall, Kiln delivers a compact yet exhilarating multiplayer experience. The unique style and humor elevate it, making each match feel like a cartoonish showdown with friends. With this release, Double Fine demonstrates it will always embrace its quirky, creative roots, regardless of business changes.
