A group of more than 25 environmental organizations in Buckinghamshire has sent a powerful letter to candidates for the upcoming council election. The message? Urgent action is needed on climate issues.

This open letter, coordinated by Bucks Climate Action, highlights five immediate priorities for council candidates. These include boosting local climate efforts, achieving net zero emissions, setting an example for positive change, aiding the shift to clean energy, and promoting sustainable travel options.
Organizations like Wycombe Friends of the Earth and Sustainable Chesham have joined this call for action. Local businesses, including Orca, a refill shop, and Bucksum, a farm shop, also showed their support. Even community groups from churches and schools are rallying behind this urgent message.
The letter makes it clear: climate change is not just a far-off problem. Buckinghamshire faces real challenges like flooding and biodiversity loss. These issues are impacting residents and local businesses right now. "Let’s work together to build resilience against these challenges," it urges.
In today’s context, addressing climate change is also about tapping into economic opportunities. Reports indicate that green jobs are rapidly growing. Communities that embrace sustainable practices can benefit from cost savings and access to government funding.
Despite the council’s focus on initiatives like tree planting, the letter points out that more comprehensive actions are needed. “We haven’t moved far enough towards a net-zero economy,” it states. There’s a lot of local volunteer activity that could be amplified with proper support from council members.
As the election approaches on May 1, candidates will face vital questions about their commitment to these climate priorities. With 97 council seats available, voters will be paying close attention to which policies can truly drive change in Buckinghamshire.
