The North Carolina Forest Service and Henderson County Emergency Management held a community meeting in Flat Rock recently. This was the first meeting in Henderson County since the Black Cove Complex fire crossed county lines. It’s the second gathering of its kind since the wildfires began; the first one was in Columbus just a few days before.
Much of the conversation focused on the Black Cove and Deep Woods fires, which currently remain 0% contained. Firefighters are particularly struggling with the southern areas of both blazes. The county also discussed its fire evacuation plan called "Get Ready, Get Set, Go."
One resident, Gleanus Gilliam from Dana, shared her concerns. She emphasized the importance of staying informed, especially in areas with poor cell service. “We had a lot of damage from the storm, so we want to be prepared,” she said.
During the meeting, representatives from the NC Forest Service confirmed that a firefighter was injured and is now recovering in Spartanburg. Thankfully, the injury is not life-threatening.
