Speaker Anita Among has raised alarms about a serious environmental crisis in Uganda. She noted that the country is experiencing unusually high temperatures.
During a recent parliamentary session, she urged lawmakers to take swift action to protect the environment. She emphasized that the current heatwave serves as a clear indication of the reality of climate change.
Many Members of Parliament echoed her concerns, linking the heatwave to the significant loss of Uganda’s forests.
David Bahati, the Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, mentioned that the government is starting to compensate people who are moving out of wetlands. This step aims to help safeguard the environment.
However, opposition members expressed that these efforts are not enough. Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition, stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to address climate change effectively.
Beatrice Anywar, the State Minister for Water and Environment, admitted that the government faces challenges in tackling the crisis, particularly due to funding shortages. She stated, “We are doing our best with the resources we have, but we need more support to effectively address the impacts of climate change.”
