The FDA is currently looking into a serious outbreak of listeria linked to frozen supplemental shakes. These shakes, sold by Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, are often used in hospitals and long-term care facilities.
So far, 11 deaths and 37 hospitalizations have been reported. The FDA learned about the issue in November, finding that some nursing home residents became ill after consuming these shakes. Some cases may even go back to 2018. In 2024 and 2025, 20 illnesses were confirmed as connected to these products.
During their investigation, the FDA found the listeria strain in the drinks. Cases have popped up in 20 different states, indicating a widespread problem. Sysco, which distributed these shakes, explained that they were supplied by Lyons from a facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The company has since halted distribution of the affected shakes and reached out to its customers about the recall.
Sysco expressed deep sympathy for those impacted by this outbreak. They emphasized their commitment to food safety and vowed to enhance programs that protect customers from foodborne illnesses.
Listeria can show symptoms 1 to 4 weeks after eating contaminated food, but in some cases, symptoms can start as soon as the same day or even up to 70 days later. According to the CDC, symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. Pregnant individuals are especially at risk, facing complications like miscarriage and severe infections in newborns.
If you or someone you know has experienced symptoms after consuming these shakes, it’s important to seek medical advice.
