The D.C. Department of Health has reported a confirmed case of measles linked to an international traveler who arrived at Dulles Airport. The individual used public transport to reach various locations around the Metro area, including Montgomery County.
On June 8, the traveler took the Silver Line train from Dulles, switched at Metro Center, and then continued on the Red Line towards Shady Grove. They were at several public places later that day, including:
- The Russian School of Mathematics in Chevy Chase from 3 to 6 p.m.
- The WMATA L8 Metrobus heading to Friendship Heights from 5 to 7 p.m.
Additional exposure sites include:
- The WMATA H4 Metrobus towards Tenleytown on June 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
- MedStar Health Pediatrics in D.C. on June 12 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
These incidents coincide with other confirmed measles cases in Maryland also linked to Dulles Airport.
If you think you may have been exposed and haven’t had two doses of the measles vaccine, reach out to your healthcare provider or call D.C. Health at 844-493-2652 for advice.
Measles is highly contagious. Symptoms can appear 10 to 12 days after exposure, and may include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash. If you show symptoms, stay home and inform your healthcare provider, especially if you suspect measles.
Recent data shows that vaccination rates for measles have dropped in some areas, creating a greater risk for outbreaks. The CDC emphasizes that at least 95% immunization is necessary to prevent the spread of measles and protect community health.
