Slovakia, New Zealand, and Lithuania have all raised concerns about Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness.
In Slovakia, health officials reported the death of an elderly man, possibly linked to sheep cheese bought from a farm in Liptov. The local food agency immediately inspected the dairy facility and the farm, checking hygiene standards and collecting samples. Tests confirmed the presence of Listeria in the sheep cheese and surrounding areas. The State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS) is now analyzing the strain to see if it’s related to the man’s illness. He was already suffering from another disease that weakened his immune system, making him more vulnerable.
Meanwhile, New Zealand has seen a rise in listeriosis cases. In 2023, there were seven related deaths and 40 hospitalizations. Last year, three product recalls occurred due to Listeria concerns. Vincent Arbuckle from New Zealand Food Safety emphasized that people can avoid listeriosis by following simple precautions. High-risk foods include ready-to-eat meats, cold-smoked fish, and soft cheeses like brie. Interestingly, Listeria can grow in cool environments, unlike many other bacteria. The agency advises cooking food thoroughly and consuming recently prepared meals.
In Lithuania, the National Public Health Centre (NVSC) reported 13 cases of listeriosis from January to May this year, with two fatalities. However, the infection wasn’t the main cause of death in those cases. The NVSC urges everyone, especially vulnerable groups like pregnant women and the elderly, to practice careful food preparation and hygiene.
Across the globe, the conversation around food safety is gaining traction. According to the CDC, listeriosis affects about 1,600 people annually in the U.S., with a mortality rate of around 20%. This stark reality is prompting both government agencies and consumers to take food safety more seriously.
As more people share their experiences on social media, there’s heightened awareness about potential foodborne illnesses. Public health campaigns are encourage individuals to not only be mindful of what they eat but also to stay informed about food recalls and safety alerts.
Staying vigilant is key. Whether you’re in Slovakia, New Zealand, or Lithuania, understanding the risks and taking preventive measures can help protect yourself and your loved ones.
