Moldova has declared a state of emergency in its energy sector. This follows the disconnection of a crucial power line with Europe due to Russian attacks in Ukraine. The emergency will last for 60 days, starting Wednesday. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has urged citizens to conserve energy, especially during peak hours. Moldova mainly imports electricity from Romania, through a cable that runs through southern Ukraine. Authorities have found crashed drones near the power line, meaning repair efforts will need to wait for demining operations. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu estimates repairs could take up to a week. Moldovan President Maia Sandu blamed Russia for the situation, echoing sentiments expressed by the foreign ministry, which condemned the latest attacks on Ukraine.
In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply criticized Russia for launching extensive daytime attacks across Ukraine, particularly in Lviv. He called the strike, which hit a church, “absolute depravity.” Zelenskyy emphasized that such aggressive actions show Russia’s unwillingness to seek peace, vowing that Ukraine would retaliate to further assaults.
Meanwhile, Moscow appears to be ramping up its offensive against Ukraine. Recent reports indicate that Russia fired nearly 400 drones and 23 cruise missiles in a single night, followed by over 556 drones in a daytime attack. This wave of strikes is one of the most significant since the invasion began in 2022, resulting in multiple fatalities and damage to historic sites in cities like Lviv.
Additionally, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un recently expressed his unwavering support for Russia in a letter to President Vladimir Putin. As relations between North Korea and Russia strengthen, Kim acknowledged cooperation to defend both nations’ sovereignty. Reports suggest North Korea has sent troops and military supplies to aid Russia, likely in exchange for food and advanced weapon systems. Intelligence agencies believe thousands of North Korean soldiers may have been deployed to support Russian efforts.
