The University of Toledo has appointed its first executive vice president for health affairs to lead its clinical operations. Dr. Charles “Chuck” Callahan, a seasoned healthcare CEO and clinical psychologist, will take on this role starting February 3.
Dr. Callahan comes with a wealth of experience. He has held various leadership positions at Memorial Health in Springfield, Illinois, including president of the Memorial Hospital Group and CEO of Springfield Memorial Hospital. He has also served as the chief operating officer and chief quality officer, making him well-equipped for this new role.
UToledo Interim President Matt Schroeder expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Callahan joining the team. He believes Callahan’s collaborative spirit and energy will help UToledo Health grow and serve the community better. “He understands our mission as an academic medical center committed to exceptional patient care,” said Schroeder.
Dr. Callahan is excited about this opportunity. He said, “Joining UToledo gives me a chance to contribute to our community through an academically informed healthcare system. I was impressed by the commitment of the colleagues I met during the interview process. Healthcare is a team sport, and I want to be part of this team.”
In his new position, Dr. Callahan will enhance collaboration between the University of Toledo Medical Center, University of Toledo Physicians, and the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. His leadership comes at a crucial time as the hospital seeks to improve and expand its services across the region.
UTMC CEO Dan Barbee and Dr. Imran Ali, interim dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, both see Dr. Callahan’s appointment as a stepping stone for improving clinical care and supporting medical education. “Our providers are ready to work with him to further enhance UToledo Health,” said Dr. Jason Schroeder, interim chief physician executive for University of Toledo Physicians.
Dr. Callahan holds a Ph.D. and master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an MBA from the University of Illinois-Springfield. His undergraduate degree in psychology is from Creighton University. He has over 50 publications in areas such as brain injury rehabilitation and healthcare improvement and has held leadership roles in professional organizations.
With a strong foundation in healthcare leadership, Dr. Callahan is poised to make significant contributions to UToledo Health and the community it serves.
