UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, has launched a new program called Whole Health for Kids: Mind, Movement and Me. This initiative is specially designed for children aged 8 to 11 to help them manage stress.
Dr. Mala Mathur leads this program and recently shared its goals on WMTV. She highlighted important findings from the Dane County Youth Assessment that show many high school students are struggling with anxiety.
“Over a quarter of high school boys and half of high school girls report feeling anxious often or constantly,” Dr. Mathur said. “By starting early, we can help kids develop better coping skills before they reach high school.”
The group medical visits provide a supportive environment where kids with similar stressors can come together. They will learn from health professionals and each other, fostering connections and understanding.
One of the key benefits of this approach is the extended time kids can spend with health experts. Each session lasts between an hour-and-a-half to two hours, typically meeting weekly for four to eight weeks. This gives children the chance to dive deeper into their feelings and challenges.
