TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. – VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital is preparing for a significant change. Liz Martin will retire in June 2025 after over 35 years in health care, with 20 of those years as president of Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. For the last six years, she has led the hospital’s transition to VCU Health.
Throughout her career, Martin has shown a strong dedication to patient care and community service. She was instrumental in the hospital’s growth and success, helping to introduce important medical programs like the Pauley Heart and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Martin expressed her mixed feelings about retiring, saying, “While a major transition like this one is always bittersweet, I am very excited for this next chapter. I have been privileged to grow and support this skilled and compassionate team.”
Her influence extends beyond hospital management. Martin has worked to boost the future of health care by co-founding initiatives like the Dr. Jeffery Haskins Scholarship Fund, which helps students pursuing health care careers in Tappahannock. She also started the Jeri Sibley VCU Health Tappahannock Cancer Care Fund, offering resources for cancer patients seeking wellness and beauty services.
Outside the hospital, Martin has actively engaged with various organizations, including the Ledwith-Lewis Free Clinic and the Essex County Chamber of Commerce. She has served on the Essex County School Board, including a term as chair. Her commitment to community and patient advocacy has made a lasting difference in the area.
Regarding her impact, Marlon Levy, M.D., of VCU Health, said, “Liz’s leadership and passion have set a remarkable standard for all of us. Her ability to unite people and create positive change will be felt for years to come.”
As Liz Martin steps down, Josh Hammond will step in as the interim president of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital. He will start working with Martin in April to ensure a seamless transition before she officially retires.
