Okotoks, AB – The Penticton Vees have advanced to the second round of the Rogers BCHL Playoffs. They clinched their spot with a 4-2 win against the Okotoks Oilers in Game Four at Viking Rentals Centre, completing a four-game sweep.
In this decisive match, the Vees’ line of Caton Ryan, Max Heise, and Anselmo Rego shined, combining for six points. Ryan and Rego both scored a goal and added an assist, while Heise contributed two assists. Luke Posthumus and Conyr Hellyer also found the back of the net, with Hellyer, a former Oilers player, sealing the victory with an empty-net score in the final moments.
In goal, Ethan Buenaventura had a solid performance, making 15 saves and improving his playoff record to 2-0. He stopped 29 of 31 shots throughout the series, showcasing his skills at just 20 years old.
The game kicked off with Ryan scoring just seven minutes in. Heise set him up perfectly for a one-timer from the slot. However, Okotoks quickly leveled the score when Brock Souch netted a breakaway goal early in the second period.
But the Vees responded. Rego scored to make it 2-1, capitalizing on a three-on-one rush. Posthumus then extended the lead to 3-1, pulling off an impressive play to score his fourth goal in three games.
As the third period progressed, the Oilers fought back. With their goalie off for an extra attacker, Coy Pighin narrowed the gap to 3-2 with just two minutes remaining. Yet, Hellyer’s empty-net goal helped put an end to any comeback hopes for Okotoks.
