Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams is set to return to the Australian Open, starting January 18 in Melbourne. She has received a wild card entry, marking nearly 28 years since her debut there in 1998.
Back then, she faced her sister Serena in the second round—a memorable match that Venus won before falling to Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals. Fast forward to today, and Venus is ready to reclaim her spot on the court.
In November, she announced plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, also receiving a wild card there. Following Auckland, she’ll participate in another tournament in Hobart, Australia, just before the Australian Open kicks off.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021. Over the years, she has reached the finals twice, losing to her sister Serena in 2003 and 2017. “I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer,” Venus shared. “I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”
Williams holds a solid record at the Australian Open, with 54 wins and 21 losses. This tournament will be her 22nd in the main draw. Notably, she’s set to become the oldest woman to compete in the Australian Open’s main draw, breaking the previous record held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 during her last match in 2015.
Interestingly, Venus has recently married Danish model and actor Andrea Preti, adding a personal milestone to her impressive career. With the upcoming Australian Open, fans and analysts alike are eager to see if the seasoned player can make a significant impact once again on the tournament stage.
As of now, Williams’ return is generating buzz on social media, with many celebrating her longevity in the sport. According to a recent poll, nearly 70% of tennis fans express excitement about seeing her back in action, highlighting her enduring popularity. The Australian Open promises to be an event to watch, not just for the tennis but for the heartfelt stories that accompany seasoned athletes like Venus Williams.
